""Martha May Reid, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Holben, was born in Whitley Co., Indiana, February 22, 1882, and came to Kansas with her parents when about two years of age. On May 21, 1905, she was united in marriage to A. W. Reid and to this union two little boys were born, the younger of whom was 16 days old when the mother was called home August 18, 1907. About nine years ago she united with the Brethren Church, in which she has since held her membership. On moving to Norcatur about seven years ago, she became an attendant at the services of the Methodist Episcopal Church, a member of the Sunday school and of the Epworth League. Her Christian life was steady and consistent. She had faith in God, a faith that was securely anchored. Her husband says that during their married life she never failed before going to rest for the night, to kneel at her bedside in prayer. In her passing away her parents have lost a kind daughter, the children a loving mother, the husband a devoted wife, and the community a real Christian. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church, Monday, August 19. Rev. Woods of the Brethren Church, preached a very appropiate sermon and was followed by Rev. Ragle in a short but most eloquent and tender eulogy of the dead and kindly advice and comfort to the living relatives and friends. Her Sunday school class requested the privilege of furnishing the pall bearers and six of the girls dressed in white with black hats, acted in that capacity. It seems unutterably sad that her two sweet boys shall never know a mothers love, that one so young and full of promise of a useful life should be thus snatched from husband and home, but the God in whom she trusted doeth all things well, and her life of meek submission to his will should lead us all to likewise submit to His will in meekness. Her faith was strong and by it, she being dead yet speaks to the hearts of those whom she loved." The house was packed with sympathizing friends and a very large concourse of people following the remains to the Norcatur Cemetery. The Royal Neighbors, of which order she was a member, were out in force, and flowers literally smothered the casket as it lay efore the altar."." Norcatur (KS) Register 23 Aug 1907.
