David grew to manhood in this newest state of Ohio having moved there between 1805 and 1808 with his parents from Penn. He was married twice and was the father of sixteen children.
A large German Bible, which in 1975 was in the possession of James Wertenberger, son of Arnold, is inscribed, "Bible purchased by Susanna Baur 10 Oct. 1832 who was born Sept. 23, 1799 and married with David Werdenberger 20 Jan. 1824". This Bible provided the names and birth dates of David's and Susanna's nine children.
Ephraim Wertenberger was about two years of age at the time of his grandfather's second marriage in 1852. The story goes that he became very upset with his father, William, who apparently had consumed too much of some of the liquid refreshment and in feeding his son, Ephraim, was unable to find his mouth!
David and Lydia and their children migrated to Kosciusko Co., Ind. apparently soon after the death of their son, Isaac Newton, in Sept. 1862, and settled in Section 2, Clay Township, located about five miles south of Warsaw. This was land he had purchased from Melvia Willis on 17 June 1862. Several of his older children already lived in the county.
David spent his remaining days there. His death followed by only one year and five months the birth of his youngest child. He died intestate the 14 Sept. 1866 and in the settlement of his estate it was noted that he owed $821.00 to fifteen individuals, including a son and two sons-in-law. In addition to his farm in Kosciusko County, Ind., he owned land in Illinois which was sold for $1.200.00.
